Sudden Shifts: How Oil Extraction Plants Boost Rapeseed Processing Amid Modest Sunflower Yields
Зміст
Low Yields Push Plants Toward Rapeseed and Soy
In Ukraine’s southern and central regions, particularly Odesa and Dnipropetrovsk, early harvest figures reveal abnormally low sunflower output — merely 1.8 thousand tons from 3.2 thousand hectares, equating to about 0.56 t/ha (agroportal.ua).
As a countermeasure, oil-extraction facilities maintain exceptionally high procurement prices for this scarce raw material while simultaneously pivoting toward rapeseed and soybean processing. This is a vital strategy to secure uninterrupted operations throughout the season.
Rapeseed Profitability as the Main Driver
The current purchase price for sunflower hovers around 26,000–27,000 UAH/t (at 50% oil content), delivered to plants — remaining elevated due to resilient demand for sunflower oil. Yet, mass harvesting of sunflowers is not expected until September 10–15, adding to market pressure. On the other hand, rapeseed processing presently yields higher margins than sunflower. Thus, plants in September–October are actively purchasing rapeseed and soybeans to secure a steady raw material supply (agroportal.ua).
Global Forecasts and Price Dynamics
The Russian Oil and Fat Union has downgraded its production forecasts: 33.5 million tons of oilseeds are expected in 2025, including 5.3 million tons of rapeseed, 8 million tons of soybeans, and 18.3 million tons of sunflower — a significant increase compared to last year (agroportal.ua). Meanwhile, vegetable oil production is forecasted at 10.5 million tons, exerting downward pressure on pricing.
Prices for Russian sunflower oil with August–September delivery fell by $5–10/t during the week, reaching $1130–1135/t. This drop reflects seasonal cheapening alongside expectations of a record harvest.
Analysts caution: in September, supplies of rapeseed and sunflower oil from the EU, Ukraine, and Russia may increase — especially with weaker demand from India toward month’s end. Without logistical or regulatory support, this could trigger further price declines (agroportal.ua).
